AMATEUR SELECTORS: SHORT STACKS

Picture
4 DJs have one hour to explore a specific genre, theme, or feel. Hosted by Ben Crabb.

7-8pm - David Otten (Bettendorf Library)
[Downtempo]
More of a vibe than a genre, Downtempo emerged from the chillout rooms of UK raves in the 90s. This short stacks set explores some of David's favorite songs with after-hours vibes from his record collection.

8-9pm - Jay Bryant (KALA FM)
[Foreign Frequencies] A vibrant selection of international sounds, ear-deep in sub-genres, including a taste of West African Psychedelia, South African Kwaito, Ghanian Highlife, Nigerian Synth-Pop, Camaroonian Electronic, Egyptian & Ethiopian Jazz, Libyan Rock, Yugoslavian Folk, Turkish Folk Rock, and Brazilian & Tunisian Soul.

9-10pm - Zeb Brooks (Griot
Mareh)
[Studio One Reggae]: When it comes to foundation sounds, Studio One is the first name that comes to mind. Clement "Coxson" Dodd's recording facility shaped the sound of Jamaican music from Ska onwards. Some of the most famous "Riddims" came out of Studio One's Rocksteady era and are used to this day. Studio One was the centerpoint of musical innovation on the island and has remained influential since its inception.

10-11pm - Dennis Hockaday (Ragged Records)

[NYC 80s Club Scene] From 1978 to 1984 when No Wave, House, Experimental, Hip Hop and Punk lived in harmony and created one of the most important and diverse music scenes of the 20th century. Playing music from Liquid Liquid, Arthur Russell, Grandmaster Flash, DNA, Sonic Youth, Lydia Lunch, Phillip Glass and more.

OUTLETProgramme PRESENTS: JEREMY YOUNG + JESSE PERLSTEIN
w/ BISSELL & BERNS

Picture
JEREMY YOUNG is a maker of analog concrète electronic tape music from Tiohtià:ke/Montréal, Quebec. He is a member of the experimental poetry_sound unit Cloud Circuit, alongside writer Deanna Radford, and the electroacoustic modern classical trio Sontag Shogun, with pianist Ian Temple and sound/voice artist Jesse Perlstein, as well as other projects. Making use of a sine and square wave oscillator system, 1/4″ magnetic tape loops, filtered radio and EMF signal, and foley-inspired sound treatments from amplified surfaces and objects, Young’s improvisational techniques are influenced by Cagean chance as well as haptics-based praxis and deep listening. His unique, grid-less approach is anchored by combining the physical treatment of audio signal with complex musical content to create sonic narratives imprinted by the media on which they are recorded, edited, and played back.

Here in Rock Island, Young will perform sketches for tape and oscillators extrapolating the material on his new record, Cablcar (2025, Halocline Trance).

JESSE PERLSTEIN is an LA-based composer/performer. He uses a mix of vocals, field recordings dubbed-to-tape, synth & analog processing to create experimental compositions bridging ambient soundscapes with looped harmonizing voice, resulting in rhythms and melodies that build, swell and explode into noise. He is also a member of the experimental, neo-classical trio Sontag Shogun, and the improvisational industrial techno outfit AxOxH.

MR. SOFTHEART + COUGH 'N FLOP

Picture
MR. SOFTHEART
mrsoftheartintl.bandcamp.com/album/reflections-on-primitive-action

Mr. Softheart (Des Moines, Iowa) is self-described ‘21st Century Vision Music.’ A heady and atmospheric blend of post-punk, 80s synth pop and dance music, the 4-piece builds a sleazy, off-kilter world around lead singer Nick Fisher’s poetics of misdirection. John Fisher’s shape-shifting synth work joins together with Charlie Patterson’s intricate guitars and Halen Becker’s mesmerizing backing vocals to create a genre-defying experience that Little Village Magazine described as “Iowa’s greatest cinematic export.”

The band’s debut record ‘Magdalene in Crisis’ was released in December of 2023, and their latest EP ‘Songs for Subdued Space’ was released in July of 2024. Mr. Softheart supported the EP with an east coast tour culminating in two performances at the historic Val Air Ballroom opening for Phantogram and Underoath, respectively. The group will release a follow up to ‘Subdued Space’ in summer of 2025.

Picture
STEPHAN HALUSKA - prepared harp
ADAM SHEAD - drums, percussion

https://www.adamsheadmusic.com/
https://stephanhaluska.wordpress.com/

Percussionist Adam Shead and harpist Stephan Haluska form an inventive duo that explores the outer edges of sound through improvisation and experimental music. Based in Chicago and Cleveland respectively, the two musicians merge their unique instrumental voices—percussion and harp—into textured, dynamic soundscapes that blur genre boundaries. Their collaboration draws on a shared commitment to sonic exploration and contemporary composition, creating performances that are as meditative as they are unpredictable.

Adam Shead is a Chicago-based percussionist and composer with deep roots in avant-garde jazz and experimental music. He has studied at Columbia College Chicago and the University of Michigan, and has performed with notable artists such as Marilyn Crispell and Roscoe Mitchell.

Stephan Haluska, based in Cleveland, is a harpist known for his use of extended techniques, electronic processing, and prepared harp textures. He holds degrees from Mills College and Bowling Green State University, and is active in both performance and education, including his work with the Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project. Together, Shead and Haluska craft a distinct musical language that reimagines the possibilities of their instruments.

DAN ENGLISH

Picture
DAN ENGLISH
danenglish.bandcamp.com/album/sky-record

For the longing listener… The music of composer Dan English is the communing of the head and the heart sharing secrets. The songs subsume time into feelings and images of purity, sonically and spiritually, and then, somewhat masochistically, play with lyrics drawn from the dingier parts of life: love, family, and capricious head-spaces. It’s movie-music; eternal scores for an espionage film with a protagonist who’s a clandestine, time-traveling romantic tailing the spirit itself.

Born in a quiet town in Iowa, he grew up chasing invisible things: codes in books, echoes in movies, half-sentences in songs. English found himself glued to the radio from an early age and, after picking up guitar at 10, language and sound conspired. The music is part confession, part séance— lush spells where the sacred and the stained trade places. Emotions arrive in disguises: Tenderness (smoke), grief (rhythm), silence (a cathedral on the verge of collapse).

Following a move to New York City, Dan released his first album “Fruit Boy"  in 2018 followed by 2020’s “In Grace” EP. Since, Dan has journeyed into his next body of work with the release of “Across my Jaw”: a song that trembles beneath restraint before bursting open— a shattering modern hymn.

In addition to his solo work, Dan moonlights as a guitarist for beloved NYC rock outfit Porches and is often to be found collaborating with his mysterious cousin Melody English.

His second full-length, Sky Record, is due Summer 2025. It’s less an album, more a weather system.

COLE PULICE

Saxophonist, composer and improviser Cole Pulice traffics in shimmering, otherworldly beauty. On Land’s End Eternal, their first album for Leaving Records, the Oakland-based artist expands their compositional palette beyond signal-processed saxophone to include layers of electric guitar and lush choral arrangements. The result is a prismatic collection of pastoral chamber jazz in six parts. Cole’s previous release, a 22-minute electroacoustic odyssey titled If I Don’t See You in the Future, I’ll See You In the Pasture (Longform Editions, 2023), was named ‘Best New Music’ by Pitchfork and included in the publication’s Best Songs Of The 2020s. Cole has also released a smattering of solo and collaborative work on beloved labels including Moon Glyph, Aural Canyon and Cached Media. Their performance history includes appearances at Pitchfork Music Festival (UK), Rewire (NL), ÜBERJAZZ (DE), Drone Not Drones (US), & Noise Pop Festival (US).

Jack Lion unearths the early ’00s interest in connections between jazz and electronic music and refashion it for this current era. Striking a balance between jazz composition, down-tempo break-beats, and hazy atmospherics they have made their mark as one of Iowa City’s headiest and most adventurous bands.
